High Oleocanthal Kalamata Reserve is here!

Antioxidant powerhouse coming your way! Last year’s harvest of Kalamata Reserve took home first place in World Best Healthy EVOO Contest and in the Healthy Oleocanthal Composition category! This year’s harvest has even higher levels of oleocanthal and is expected to win again! …but what is oleocanthal and why does this make it so healthy?

Ever tried an olive oil that causes some pepperiness at the back of your throat? That’s mainly caused by oleocanthal! Oleocanthal is an antioxidant and is considered a naturally occurring non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Therefore, research into its protective affects against inflammatory diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, dementia, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis are ongoing. So far, the evidence shows that EVOO rich in polyphenols (such as oleocanthal) could contribute to preventing or treating these inflammation derived diseases. While all Olive Us EVOOs have excellent chemistry and are high in polyphenols, the Kalamata Reserve is particularly high in oleocanthal (453.2ppm, out of a total phenol count of 652.1ppm), making up nearly 70% of the total phenols! Scoring very high in fruitiness & with a desirable pungency, it is highly astringent, with notes of arugula, green tea, apple peel and rose petal.
